2019 Letters By Viganò and Wuerl

Viganò's letter dated January 13, 2019, made one central point which called for McCarrick to "confess and repent of [his] sins, crimes and sacrileges, and do so publicly..." (the entirety of the letter was included in an article published by the Catholic National Register) [1].

This blogger's opinions and quotations are as follows:

1.  The gravity of one's sins is for one's own conscience to know and for God to judge.
2.  The confessions and repentances of sins are between the penitent and the confessor.
3.  "Jesus said to [Peter], 'What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?'" [2]
4.  This letter was dated January 13, 2019, a Sunday, so Viganò should have given it a rest, regardless of his courage in exposing hidden facts in his previous letters.  "The Gospel reports many incidents when Jesus was accused of violating the sabbath law. But Jesus never fails to respect the holiness of this day. He gives this law its authentic and authoritative interpretation: "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath." With compassion, Christ declares the sabbath for doing good rather than harm, for saving life rather than killing. The sabbath is the day of the Lord of mercies and a day to honor God. "The Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath." [3]  What good does it do to extract vengeance?
5.  Will the Church really "heal" with McCarrick's public confession and repentance?  There are religious in the Church who continue to sin, continually wounding the Church, in ways that may be different than McCarrick's.

Wuerl's letter dated January 12, 2019, published by Lifesitenews [4] was, based on this blogger's assumptions and opinions, largely exculpatory.  The points that follow are subjective:

1. This letter sounds like a preemptive strike against possible criminal charges that might be levied against Wuerl.
2.  This letter does not read like one Wuerl himself wrote but one written by brilliant legal minds that had cost the Church funds that could have gone to assist the needy.
3.  Wuerl could have the world's best attorneys all gather behind him to defend him but none of them will speak as effectively as the truth.
4.  No lawyer will likely want to die together with Wuerl so that Wuerl can have representation before God, not to mention the challenges in setting up a fee arrangement when eternity is at stake.
5.  It is a very lonely and fearful moment when one has nowhere to run and hide from one's truth.
